Whether this is your child's first experience in hockey, or they want to play in a non-competitive environment, our Intro to Hockey program will introduce your child to the game of hockey.
Intro to Hockey
Courses are broken into 3 age groups:
This is NOT a learn to skate course and all participants must be able to skate forward, backwards and fully stop. Full Hockey equipment is mandatory and Coaches reserve the right to deny participation if not in full gear.
Parent & Child Hockey (4yrs+)
is a great intro for children who want to start playing and benefit from additional support from their parent. Children must be able to stand on their own and skate forwards (equivalent to a preschool level 2)
Children must be in full hockey equipment and adults MUST wear a helmet.
Power Skating (7-12yrs)
is designed to increase the power and technique of your skating and hockey skills through drills, Each class will end with an organized game. This is NOT a learn to skate course and all participants must be able to push and glide with alternating feet across the width of the ice, backward skate, full stop, and skate with a hockey stick. Full Hockey equipment is mandatory and Coaches reserve the right to deny participation if not in full gear.
What does my child need to bring?
All participants must have full hockey equipment (see image below), water bottle, skates that have been sharpened, helmet (with cage recommended) and hockey stick.
Why does my child need full equipment if they are just starting out?
Now that a stick and puck are involved it is important for safety that they have the full equipment on. Additionally as they progress they become used to wearing all of the gear.
Is there a place we can get second hand equipment?
There are a few places! We recommend a store called Play it Again Sports, or 2nd Chance Sports. Comrie’s Sports Equipment bank help provide equipment to low income families.
Are there any funding options at Trico Centre to help with class fees?
Yes! We are proud to partner with Kidsport and Canadian Tire Jumpstart as well as the City of Calgary Fee Assistance. Contact Guest Services for more information or visit our Trico Cares Page
